It’s All About Gratitude.

Photography is a platform for me to unleash my inner creativity. I kept this part of myself hidden for such a long time. Taking nature shots was always enjoyable, even while I used drugs and alcohol. However, once I got sober, photography opened up a whole other side within me. My sobriety has allowed me to see a whole other side of photography as well. I was unable to see this when I was using. Photography was just a fun hobby. Now it is my passion, and I am also more passionate about my life. It is cool to find my passion. I also like seeing art by other community members. I don’t draw or paint, yet I love seeing the hard work and effort from other peoples’ creativity.

Before my life experience – everything – felt black-and-white. Now my life is full color. I am able to show new dimensions of myself and my creativity. I am happy and grateful for this outlet and way to express who I am. It’s all about gratitude. When I go out and shoot, I am grateful when I find cool nature spots or capture unique images or views of the world.

Nature is my inspiration. While using I never thought deeply about any of this. Being outside and taking photographs gives me a sense of calm that I do not get anywhere else. The act of capturing images I find beautiful gives me peace when I am going crazy in my head. Additionally, taking photos gives me a sense of exploration and discovery. Hiking on trails, finding new spots with amazing images to capture – it is all a thrill. In nature I feel that I can capture the image just the way I want it to look. I have more control. With photography of people, it is harder for me to get the shop I want. I have less control.

Now, photography is an outlet for me to share the happiness and joy that I have in my life. By sharing my photos, I hope to inspire people to unleash their inner creativity and not be scared to be their true selves.

Being in a sober and creative community like Hope Creates gives me an opportunity to be in service to other recovering addicts/alcoholics. I can get out there and help set up expressive arts events that provide support, fellowship, and creative outlets for those who need support in recovery.
